Simple guidelines on behaviour for the elderly people

In the 21st century, nearly 80% of the population (children) are neglecting their parents. When we become adults or after marriage we begin to hate or even forget our parents who have nurtured us and brought us up against so many difficulties. We forget the fact that someday we too will grow old. Thus, the expectations parents have from their children remain unfulfilled in their old age.

I would therefore advise that those who are parents, including the would be parents, and still having the authority and control in their hands should take the following precautions so that the problems typically faced in the old age problems would get resolved automatically.

1. Ideal behaviour to be adopted at the old age

1. Have a neutral view towards everything including your old age. Reduce your emotional involvement.

2. Do not demand honour or try to exercise control on others as you would have enjoyed till date in your life. This may lead to unnecessary conflict and unhappiness.

3. Do not be a burden on your family, do as many tasks as you can.

4. Be flexible in your behaviour, delegate all responsibilities onto your children; do not give unsolicited advice to your children.

5. Do not impose customs and beliefs, practised in your young age, upon the youngsters (considering the changed lifestyle). Also, instead of criticising the younger generation, attempts should be made to have healthy conversations with them.

6. No matter how grave the situation, ensure that you do not handover your entire lifetime savings to your children as this generosity could prove disastrous later.

7. Even today there are few women who save their hard-earned money for old age. A husband too should not give away all his savings to the children and make his wife dependent on them.

8. Do not worry too much about your reduced sleep, the fast-paced life outside and the personal life of your family members.

9. Be mentally prepared to change your personal plan and schedule so that none of the family members feel the obstacle.

10. Learn to appreciate the beauty of nature. Take a morning walk to breathe the fresh air. This will help in getting mental happiness as well as the needed exercise.

11. Spend most of your time in reading spiritual texts and in contemplation and meditation. Do not pay much attention to other things.

12. Try to attain Self-realisation through constant meditation.

13. Include more of vegetables, salads, fruit, milk, buttermilk and curd in your diet and reduce carbohydrates (rice, chapati, bhakri etc), sweets and oily foods.

14. Maintain physical hygiene and mental and emotional purity.

15. Keep your mind happy thinking about the fresh leaves blossoming upon a tree. Remember that the older leaves will certainly be shed !
