Weak digestion: The root cause of most diseases
The Ayurveda principle, rogAH sarve.api mande.agnau (रोगाः सर्वेऽपि मन्देऽग्नौ), states that the primary cause of almost all diseases is a weakened digestive fire (Mandagni). Food is something we consume daily, for the body’s functions to run smoothly, this food must be digested properly. If it remains undigested, it creates a type of toxin within the body known as Āma. In any disease, it is essential to digest and eliminate this Āma.

The connection between digestion and illness
Consider a traditional wood-burning stove (Chulha). When we place a pot of water and rice over a lit stove, the rice eventually cooks. However, if ash accumulates over the wood, the fire cannot burn effectively, and the rice remains undercooked. Similarly, when the body’s internal fire, the digestive power, is covered by ash in the form of imbalances in the Vata, Pitta, and Kapha doshas – the digestive fire becomes faint. In this state, food does not digest properly, leading to the creation of aama. If left unaddressed, this leads to disorders such as fever, cold, acidity, arthritis, constipation, and diabetes.
Gradually strengthening the digestive fire
When a wood-burning stove splutters, we rearrange the wood to allow air. If the fire is extremely weak, we remove the wood, clear out the excess ash, and restart it, first with paper, then small twigs, followed by larger branches, and finally heavy logs. This gradual process ensures the fire blazes strongly enough to cook food.
The same principle applies to the human body. In any disease, if the Jatharagni (digestive fire) is gradually rekindled before starting medication, the disease is often half-cured even before the first dose has to be ingested. Medicine is only effective if it is digested; if taken while digestion is weak, it may cause harm instead of healing. This process of gradually restoring the digestive fire is known in Ayurveda as Samsarjana Krama.
Dietary regimen to maintain good digestion
If a person typically eats two meals and two snacks a day, they should transition to the following diet for a few days. Saindhav salt (Himalayan rock salt) may be added to these foods for taste.

Important guidelines during the regimen
A. Consult a Vaidya (Ayurvedic physician) and, if possible, pause other medications during this period.
B. If taking medication for diabetes, consult your Vaidya to adjust the dosage according to this diet.
C. Do not consume anything outside of the prescribed foods; avoid tea or herbal decoctions like kashay.
D. Avoid sleeping during the day and do not stay up late at night.
E. Use warm water for both drinking and bathing.
F. Observe celibacy (Brahmacharya).
G. Do not suppress natural urges (urination, bowel movements, etc.).
H. Avoid harsh sunlight, heavy exercise, and overexertion.
Following this regimen for good health
Following this dietary regimen helps root out diseases and ensures that any necessary medicines work effectively. If you feel your digestion has slowed down, you can follow this regimen once every month.
Since digestive power naturally weakens during the rainy season, it is recommended to follow this protocol for at least that duration to maintain health. Ailments like fever, diarrhea, acidity, indigestion, cold, and cough can often be cured by this regimen alone without additional medicine. Furthermore, this practice also assists in reducing excess body weight.
