Tributes
Sachchidananda Parabrahman Dr Jayant Balaji Athavale was born on 6 May 1942 (Vaishakha Krushna Saptami, Kaliyug 5044) in Nagothane village, Raigad district, Maharashtra, as the third child of Shri. Balaji Athavale and Sou. Nalini Athavale. From childhood he excelled in both academics and the arts, winning scholarships, placing on the merit list in SSC, and heading school and college activity groups.
After his MBBS from Mumbai University, Dr Athavale pursued psychiatry in the United Kingdom (1971-1978). There he became an internationally acclaimed clinical hypnotherapist, presenting more than 50 research papers and authoring pioneering manuals on hypnosis-based therapies. His scientific temperament, meticulous documentation, and compassion for patients laid the foundation for the spiritual research he would later champion.
Despite worldly success, Dr Athavale felt medical science explained only the surface of human suffering. He returned to India in 1982. Seeking deeper answers, he approached numerous Saints when his Guru Bhaktaraj Maharak took him under His tutelage and Dr Athavale began sadhana under His guidance. By fusing his clinical discipline with the Guru’s spiritual insights he shaped a unique, methodical approach to spirituality
Dr Athavale distilled the essence of Karma-yoga, Jnan-yoga and Bhakti-yoga into an eight-step discipline called Gurukrupayoga (Path of the Guru’s Grace). The method combines personality defect removal, ego removal, chanting, service, satsang among other paths so that an average seeker can make tangible inner progress in a short span. As of 2025, 130 seekers had already attained Sainthood and 1000 had crossed the 60 % spiritual level by following this path – a statistic rarely heard in modern times.
In 1999, with blessings of Saints, Dr Athavale founded Sanatan Sanstha, a non-profit spiritual organisation dedicated to reviving Sanatan Dharma worldwide. Headquartered at Ramnathi (Goa) and extending to hundreds of study-centres, Sanatan Sanstha emphasises practical sadhana and service to Nation & Dharma. Under his guidance the organisation has produced over 360 books in 13 languages, hosts daily satsangs, and runs Ashrams which are modern-day Gurukuls for those who wish to get acquainted with their true self.
Whether using universal aura scanners, pendulum dowsing or subtle reading, Dr Athavale approached every spiritual phenomenon with a scientific perspective. Every phenomenon is corroborated by multiple seekers and documented like laboratory data. These findings are used to get the scientific community interested in spirituality and increase the layman’s shraddha in Sanatan Dharma.
From 2012 onwards, seekers world-wide witnessed showers of Divine particles (materialised Chaitanya), pinkish radiance on His skin, appearance of various auspicious symbols like Om, Swastik, Lotus patterns on His skin and nails, subtle fragrances permeating spaces He visited, and inexplicable changes in objects used by Sachchidananda Parabrahman Dr Athavale. The ancient Saptarshis (through Nadi-patti readings) proclaimed him a Vishnu Incarnation tasked with re-establishing Dharma. These Divine changes in His body and His presence are a testament to the Saptarshis’ claims.
Publications: Over 10 million copies of Sanatan texts in 13 languages covering rituals, personality development, national security, subtle energies, Ayurveda and survival in adverse times, have been published. He is also the founder-editor of the Sanatan Prabhat Media Group, dedicated to serve the interests of the Nation & Dharma
Discourses: He travelled extensively to conduct lectures on spirituality, demystifying topics related to Dharma and gently guiding the spiritually curious on their journey to happiness.
Visionary: He recognised the need to present spiritual concepts in scientific terms to appeal to the modern generations. He has foreseen the untold destruction that the current spiritual climate will unleash and exhorted humanity to take up spiritual practice in earnest.
Sanatan Sanstha conducts awareness drives to curb malpractices in festivals, judicially-assisted drives against malpractices like cow-slaughter and corruption, and outreach campaigns for a Hindu Rashtra grounded in equality, environmental balance and Sanatan Dharma.
Reach: Readers in over 100 countries regularly turn to Sanatan.org as their primary source for all queries related to Sanatan Dharma and spirituality
Weekly study circles / satsangs: 1,300 + free satsangs for those desirous of achieving everlasting peace and happiness in their lives
Ongoing social service : Rree medical camps, temple cleaning, food distribution, etc across the nation
Future vision : Maharshi Adhyatma Vishwavidyalay (Maharshi University of Spirituality) founded by Sachchidananda Parabrahman Dr Athavale to offer formal education with a base of spiritual science, ensuring that vocational training is also a means of God-realisation.
May this overview serve as both homage and handbook, guiding every seeker towards eternal bliss under the ever-compassionate gaze of Sachchidananda Parabrahman (Dr) Jayant Balaji Athavale.
