Quality of happiness obtained through the various bodies
  • Happiness obtained through the physical body, through the medium of the five senses:
Eating one’s favourite dish, listening to music, watching a movie, etc., are pleasurable initially, but if one repeats the act over and over, the happiness obtained from it goes on decreasing and ultimately, the very same things cause unhappiness due to overindulgence. For example, when one is eating their favourite food like, say, ice cream, he will relish the first few scoops of the ice cream. As he continues eating, he does so with decreasing relish and finally, he will refuse to eat any more. The same is the case with object pleasure experienced through the five senses. That is why Spirituality teaches that ultimately, unhappiness lies in everything that gives happiness.

  • Happiness obtained through the subtle body (desire body, mental body):
The quality and quantity of happiness obtained through the mind, for example, by loving someone, is higher than that obtained through the five senses. Its duration is also longer. Later, when the romance successfully culminates into marriage, the happiness obtained from it decreases.

  • Happiness obtained through the causal body (intellect):
Although the happiness obtained through the intellect, for example, studying a particular subject, understanding it, solving a difficult mathematical problem, discovering something after doing intense research, etc., is of a higher quality and quantity than the happiness obtained through the mind, it too, is transitory.

  • Quality of happiness derived through the various organs:

This table shows that someone with a handicap in a motor or sense organ, for example, someone who is crippled or totally deaf, need not get dejected because in reality, he is experiencing only 2% less happiness than someone who does not have such handicaps. In spite of this, several people develop an inferiority complex due to their handicap and make themselves unhappy.

  • Physical and psychological happiness:
Physical happiness can affect health unfavourably. This does not occur with psychological happiness.

  • Various bodies and the quality and quantity of happiness and unhappiness experienced through them:
There are differences in the quality and quantity of happiness and unhappiness obtained through the physical (five sense organs), subtle (vital energy and mind), and causal (intellect) bodies. For example, the pain in the physical body is localized to the site of the injury whereas the pain in the mental body it is generalized.
