Forgetting Oneself

Question: If the aim of Spirituality is to forget ‘I’, which prevents us from experiencing permanent Bliss, what is the difference between forgetting oneself while concentrating on work and forgetting oneself while chanting* the Lord’s Name?

- A Reader.

Dear Reader,

The aim of Spirituality is to experience permanent, not temporary, Bliss. For an average person, the possibility of being engrossed in work to the extent of forgetting oneself for many hours daily is next to impossible. Additionally, while engrossed in work, a new impression of work is created in the mind, which further reinforces the mind, part of ‘I,’ rather than dissolving it.

Furthermore, in order to experience Bliss, the source of the Bliss should be permanently Blissful. There is no source other than God that is permanently Blissful. Therefore, chanting the Lord’s Name is the surest way to achieve the state of permanent Bliss, as the Lord’s Name and The Lord are one and the same.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
