Individual spiritual practice and that for the sake of society

“As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And He said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’”

- Matthew 4.18-19, Holy Bible (New Revised Standard Version).

Implied meaning:

In the above quote, ‘Follow me’ means undertake spiritual practice according to My (Jesus’) teachings. ‘I will make you fish for people’ means that Peter and Andrew would study Spirituality as their individual spiritual practice and preach it to the masses, thus bringing about the spiritual practice of all of society.

According to the influence of time in the present era, Kaliyug, spiritual practice for the sake of society is of 70% importance while individual spiritual practice is only of 30% importance. Hence, to progress spiritually, it is important to motivate as many people in society as possible, in order to practice Spirituality completely. This is service unto the Absolute Truth (satseva), in the real sense. However, in order to do this, one needs to increase one’s own spiritual maturity first, which is done through individual spiritual practice.
