Intense desire to do spiritual practice removes obstacles

We had some relatives staying over at our place. Initially, when I heard that they were coming for a visit, I was a bit anxious about whether I would be able to continue with my spiritual practice during their stay. I thought that their visit might pose an obstacle to my spiritual practice. However, to my pleasant surprise, I found that my relatives were very accommodating and they encouraged me to go ahead with my spiritual practice. They even helped me by handling a major portion of the housework and the cooking so that I could devote time to spiritual practice.

- Mrs. Jyotsna Ranade, New Jersey, U.S.A. (2000)

[In Spirituality, a key ingredient for faster spiritual progress is intense desire for God. When there is an obstacle in following that desire through with action, as was the case for Mrs. Ranade, God will surely remove it so that we may reach Him more rapidly.

Being saved from accidents due to chanting*

Some time ago, we had moved to Chicago. Shortly after moving, we registered our car there, though we still had to obtain a local driving license. I still had a New Jersey driving license, where we last lived, though I had hardly done any driving there. After moving to Chicago, I took the opportunity to drive whenever my husband was accompanying me. I have noticed that when I am driving, I can’t chant much. In fact, I can hardly chant for two percent of the time while driving. By contrast, I can chant at least 70% of the time while my husband is driving.

During one month of living in Chicago, we barely missed getting into an accident on three occasions, while my husband was driving. Two of these potential accidents could have been really severe. I noticed that my chanting was intense during both these incidents. I know that only chanting the Lord’s Name had saved us from these accidents.

- Mrs. Suhasini Kale , USA (2000)

[Chanting the Lord’s Name creates and provides a divine protective sheath. The more we chant, the greater the amount of protection, as experienced by Mrs. Kale.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one’s current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
