Experience of spiritual emotion while walking on the street

I was walking on the street, chanting*. A feeling of happiness overcame me and for about ten to twenty seconds I felt spiritual love for all the people I saw around me. It was so intense that I wanted to tell them all about the way I felt and even hug them all at once. (Normally I am a very conservative and shy person.) I had the urge to show them the love I felt. I felt spiritually 'high' for those few moments. When that feeling subsided, I went back to the state of normal happiness. This feeling was much more intense than the happiness I experienced before.

- A Seeker (February 1999).
[Appropriate spiritual practice, such as chanting in the case of this seeker, brings about spiritual growth in terms of awakening of spiritual emotion. As a result, the seeker was able to experience intense love for even strangers, which was very unusual, given the seeker’s normal temperament. Since Spirituality is a science of actual practice and experience, no amount of convincing, explaining, or verbal education can teach as actual experience does.

Experience of spontaneous spiritual emotion at my workplace

One day, at the agency where I work, I started feeling immense spiritual love for all people. I experienced a very light feeling in and around me, and everything felt bright and colorful. I laughed and smiled and was so happy…I could not control the outburst of this joy for two hours.

- A Seeker (February 1999).
[The above experience shows the pervasive nature of spirituality and appropriate spiritual practice. Many believe that Spirituality and worldly life have no common ground. This seeker’s spiritual experience demonstrates that even in the most mundane of settings, spirituality, such as spiritual emotion, can be found. Such an experience is possible only when one receives appropriate guidance and follows it accordingly.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one’s current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
