Experience of humility and devotion when kneeling before Mother Mary’s statue

I have recently started the spiritual practice of chanting*, under the guidance of the Sanatan organization. I am a Catholic; in our religion, we kneel at a bench in front of the statue of Mother Mary to say our prayers. I never knelt before, as I thought people would laugh at me. Now I realize that it was my ego. One day I went to church and just had to kneel! Even though I have had a broken cartilage and one of my knees has been treated surgically, which posed as an obstacle to kneeling down, I went ahead and knelt down. Even after kneeling for about twenty minutes. I felt no pain whatsoever. The feeling while praying was a lot of devotion to God. Ever since that day, I always kneel when praying.

- A Seeker (May 1999).
[Appropriate spiritual practice, such as chanting in the case of this seeker, brings about spiritual growth in terms of increase in humility, faith and devotion. Hence, the seeker, who would not kneel before, felt from within like kneeling and experienced the joy of it firsthand. Since Spirituality is a science of actual practice and experience, no amount of convincing, explaining, or verbal education can teach as actual experience does.

Getting positive news after chanting* the appropriate chant

I moved with my family to Chicago a month ago. We have yet to receive our furniture and belongings, which has made it extremely difficult to continue with routine life. I have a very active two-year-old daughter, looking after whom is a challenge with limited resources. To be able to face this unexpected situation, I started doing prayers and the chant of Lord Ganesh that I used to do, before commencing spiritual practice according to the science of Spirituality, under the Sanatan organization’s guidance. However, nothing happened. Somewhere, I felt that I was not following the science of Spirituality correctly, which recommends the chanting of The Lord’s Name as per one’s religion (Name of the family deity in my religion). So a few days ago, I stood in front of the altar at home and surrendered to God, saying that I will now start chanting the family deity’s Name. The very next day, we got news that we would be receiving our belongings soon. This increased my faith in the science of Spirituality.

[The above experience shows the importance of doing spiritual practice according to the science of Spirituality or under the guidance of a spiritual authority, in comparison with spiritual practice done as per one’s own liking or (limited) understanding of Spirituality.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one’s current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
