Need For Spirituality
Spirituality for protection from and lasting eradication of sexual slavery

“There are over four million victims of sexual slavery worldwide. Up to now, our Magdalene Center work had primarily focused on third world countries. Now, we see evidence that over 50,000 women and children in the United States are victims of sexual slavery. It is shocking and disgraceful that we must contemplate expanding our Magdalene Program into the USA, the richest and most powerful nation on earth. The global trafficking in the sex trade will only end when faith and morals are strengthened in every society in the world,” said Father Richard Welch, President of Human Life International.

“It is impossible to think that the global trade of women and children for perverted sexual use will end simply by stricter law enforcement measures, although they are a welcome and necessary step.” Father Welch was referring to consideration in the United States Congress towards introducing federal legislation offering help and asylum to sex trade victims, as well as imposing severe punishment on sex trade profiteers, and possible economic sanctions against nations that encourage the sex trade industry.

Father Welch's viewpoint is supported by the science of Spirituality. According to the science of Spirituality, the reduction of spiritual purity (sattva) and increase in spiritual impurity (raja-tama) in society leads to a rise in immorality. Legislation, being a gross measure, can at best curb the gross immoral behavior. It cannot change the subtle attitude that leads to the immoral behavior. Hence, despite strict legislation, immorality in society continues to grow.

Deep-rooted attitudes, such as that of immorality, can only be changed through equally deep reaching, subtle means, namely, spiritual practice*. Hence, as Father Welch has proposed, it is imperative to increase the practice of Spirituality in society for a lasting reduction in immorality and other undesirable attitudes in society. To begin with, one can commence spiritual practice for inner purity and divine protection from immorality. As one grows in spiritual experience and maturity, one can motivate others to practice Spirituality by sharing with them the benefits of Spirituality that one has experienced firsthand.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
