Need For Spirituality
Spiritual practice is essential to identify the spiritually evolved

USA. Some time ago, there were news reports on Carl Joseph, a roaming preacher originally from Toledo, Ohio. He called himself ‘What’s your name’ and walked from town to town, barefoot, wearing a white flowing robe, long hair, and a beard. It was reported that he was apparently trying to spread the message of peace, love and good will. Many people thought that he was dressed like Jesus. Some news channels interviewed him personally. When asked if he thought that he was the Christ, he would answer in the negative, saying, “I’m just a sinner, just a man; just following a simple path.” He, however, said that he is one of God’s messengers, spreading the message, “Love one another.” He did not have a church, not even a home.

The man known as ‘What’s your name’ had started preaching to anyone who would listen. When he had appeared on a local TV show, many people phoned in to talk to him. The crowds following him got bigger. People reached out to him wherever he went. Some miracles, too, were attributed to him. When asked if he can perform miracles, he had replied, “If there is healing, that comes from God; only God Himself could do that.”

There were also many, who were cynical about ‘What’s your name’. They questioned his ways and motives. They thought that he was hoodwinking people.

The news about Carl Joseph echoes a question that must have entered many minds - “Is he a false prophet out to con people or is he, indeed, a messenger of God?” The responsibility to find out the truth about any such person naturally lies on the questioner.

Phenomena like someone’s spiritual level lie beyond the comprehension of the gross senses, mind and intellect. Hence, to decipher someone’s spiritual level one needs a keen perception of the subtle or of phenomena that lie beyond the gross. Spirituality is the science about subtle phenomena and God. Hence, daily spiritual practice* based on study and actual practice of the principles of Spirituality helps develop perception of the subtle or the divine. Thus, the only way to know for sure if people like Carl Joseph are spiritually evolved is to understand and pursue Spirituality, which holds the answers to all such questions.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
