Need For Spirituality
Spirituality and pollution control

U.K. – In year 2000, the then British Deputy Prime Minister had pledged that Britain would lead the world in cutting harmful greenhouse gases. He had said that it would cut emission by almost double the target set under the Kyoto climate change deal. The reduction would be achieved by 2010. The Deputy Prime Minister had said that Mozambique floods and other calamities such as the Indonesian jungle fires, had underlined the need for action in this regard.

Whether Britain is on the way to achieving this target remains to be seen. In the meantime, it is a known and tragic fact that natural calamities have increased tremendously, with the Asian Tsunami still haunting our memory.

It is encouraging that influential governments are getting serious about eliminating greenhouse gas and other types of pollution. Vedic scriptures proclaim that the vagaries of nature are but a reflection of the human mind. The more spiritually pure (sattvik) the human mind, the more balanced is nature. The world today is threatened by a subtle pollution, of spiritual impurities (raja-tama elements). This pollution is the root cause of the increasing incidences of natural calamities.

The only solution to overcome this subtle element pollution is regular spiritual practice*. Doing regular spiritual practice oneself, experiencing its benefits firsthand, and motivating others to do spiritual practice by sharing the benefits one has experienced will help increase the spiritual purity in oneself and others. In the long term, this will help stem the subtle spiritual pollution, consequently overcoming gross pollutions like crime, violence, undesirable attitudes and environmental pollution.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
