Need For Spirituality
Spirituality – to remove the attitude of
intolerance leading to racial discrimination

U.K. – A British Government report says that accepting organs on ‘racist’ conditions was in breach of the Race Relations Act. A scandal had taken place in 1998 when relatives of a man declared dead in a Sheffield hospital, were asked whether they would allow his organs to be donated. They agreed on the condition that the organs went to white recipients. A transplant coordinator had agreed to the condition and accordingly, the deceased’s liver and kidneys were given to three white patients. A unit treating two children with Asian sounding names was not contacted due to this condition.

The health minister had said that the case was ‘appalling’ and pledged that such an incident will not happen again. The chief executive of UK Transplant Support Service Authority, which is responsible for the organ donation system, will take early retirement due to the incident.

Even in the 21st century, racial discrimination continues despite all apparent attempts to eliminate it. This is a perfect example of people suffering needlessly due to such prejudice. If we want to live in true harmony, evils like racial discrimination have to be done away with.

Discrimination of any sort, including racial discrimination, occurs mainly because of the basic attitude of intolerance towards something considered “different.” A deep-rooted attitude such as this needs an equally deep cleansing process. Till date, attempts in this regard have proved inadequate, because the problem has not been tackled at the deep-rooted, attitude level. Regular spiritual practice*, being a deep reaching process, helps in weeding out undesirable attitudes like intolerance and prejudice. At the same time, it nurtures positive attitudes like tolerance, unconditional love for others, etc.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
