Importance of asking questions
Question: “I have read that in Spirituality, obedience. It is good to obey what one is taught by sacred texts and Saints, and not ask questions. Then why is so much importance given to clarification of doubts?”
- Mrs. Meena, New Jersey, USA.

Dear Mrs. Meena,

Obedience is undoubtedly the key quality for a seeker. However, generally for a novice in Spirituality, it is difficult to obey unless his doubts are clarified at an intellectual level. It is only later that one realizes that with the intellect, one can understand Spirituality to the extent of only 2%. To really understand Spirituality, faith is 98% important. However, a lot of spiritual practice is needed to develop such faith to be able to accept and follow spiritual guidance unconditionally. Spiritual practice can not be smooth unless doubts are clarified. If doubts keep arising, it is difficult to develop faith. Hence, one should not hesitate to ask questions.

Further, curiosity or inquisitiveness about God is actually a quality necessary to experience spiritual knowledge. Saint Bhaktaraj has said, “Only the curious are deserving of knowledge.” Also, if a topic in Spirituality is not understood, seeking clarification in a timely manner will help prevent needling doubts about it.

Here are some suggestions on asking the right questions that are beneficial for one's spiritual growth:

  • Questions pertaining to Spirituality and not to worldly matters.

  • Relevant questions, not questions for the sake of asking questions.

  • Questions of benefit to others as well; that is, questions from which others also can learn something useful about spiritual practice.

Thus, it is beneficial to ask questions that will be helpful in spiritual practice for oneself and others. For example, what spiritual practice should one do? Is one's spiritual practice appropriate? How can one improve one’s daily practice? How can one overcome obstacles in spiritual practice? What does a particular spiritual quote imply, how can one apply it in daily life?

How to chant
Question: “Is it okay to chant aloud? How exactly should one chant?”
- Mr. Gray, Atlanta, USA.

Dear Mr. Gray,

There are many ways to chant. The various ways, their advantages and disadvantages are given in this table. The various ways to chant or remember The Lord continually are given in an order progressing from the most gross to the most subtle.

How to chant or remember The Lord
Benefits
Disadvantages
Writing The Lord’s Name Chanting occurs through all the three media - the hands, eyes and the mind. At the most gross level. Hence, not that effective; cannot be done continuously.
Verbally (aloud) Facilitates concentration; benefit of pranayam; sound waves from it help to make the atmosphere pure (sattvik). It can pose as an obstacle to others’ thinking and spiritual practice; the mind cannot attain the thoughtless state.
Upanshu (uttered with slight movement of the tongue and lips so that it is audible only to oneself) All the benefits of chanting aloud;
Can be done continuously, since it is subtler than chanting aloud; benefit is 100 times more.
Difficult to do in the initial stages.
Mentally Benefits are significantly more than Upanshu, as the more subtler the chanting, the more effective it is. Difficult to do in the initial stages.

In keeping with a basic principle of Spirituality, namely, progressing from the gross to the subtle, the aim is to chant in the subtlest way. The subtler the chanting, the greater is its effectiveness. However, one should chant in a way that one is most comfortable with and that generates the most devotion. Also, one should chant in the way that minimizes the wandering of the mind.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
