Chanting - a deep reaching tool to
overcome psychosomatic diseases like anorexia

According to a news report, a group of British psychiatrists added another page to the possible causes of the disorder that affects more than 1 out of 250 girls and young women in the U.S. alone. The psychiatrists said that on the surface, the psychology of anorexia is tantalizingly simple. The disease process convinces the victims that they are fat and they slowly give in to the idea that nothing could ever be quite so important as getting rid of the ‘fat’. Beneath their single-minded dedication to starvation techniques and denial, however, anorexics are generally dealing with an array of psychological, social and physical conflicts. The key to treatment and prevention, experts agree, is isolating the triggers in each anorexic, addressing those problems, and eventually, simply hoping that the patient is strong enough to survive.

As the experts have said, the main cause of anorexia is a central conviction that one is abnormally fat. One can imagine how triggers like the excessive importance given to body image in today's media or society would aggravate such disorders. Even if one wants to isolate all the triggers, to get rid of them, it would be impractical, as there will always be some or the other trigger at play, be it a TV commercial about how to lose weight, or a billboard sign with skinny models or the general perception that being fat is not beautiful. Thus, the suggested approach of trying to remove the triggers and eventually, simply hoping that the patient will withstand the illness, cannot be the best solution to the problem.

Negative convictions, such as about one's level of 'fat', are deeply rooted in one's subconscious mind. Hence, equally deep reaching method is needed to remove the conviction. The spiritual practice of chanting* God's Name is one such a deep reaching tool. It not only cleanses us of such negative convictions, but also infuses us from within, with a tremendous sense of positivism about life. (For mechanism of how chanting works on removing negative impressions and attitudes, refer to Issue 23, Clarification of Doubts section.)

- Editor.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
