Which chant should I chant?
Question: "Should we take some time out especially for chanting*? Also, where and when should we chant? ”
- Ms. Dena, New Jersey, USA.

A Saint from India, His Holiness Bhaktaraj Maharaj, had answered a similar question as follows: “Chanting while performing daily activities is a superior spiritual practice compared to chanting while sitting in one place. In the former, continuity of spiritual practice is maintained. Also, a person chanting continuously while performing worldly tasks, in spite of living in the Great Illusion (worldly bondage), is beyond it.

Maintaining communion with God in all circumstances is called Sahajavastha (natural state of communion with God).”

Hence, one can and should chant anywhere and at all times possible.

In the initial stages of spiritual practice, one is still getting used to spiritual practice. At that stage, it is helpful to set aside some time (at least an hour to two) daily for spiritual practice, such as chanting. It helps develop a spiritual routine and the discipline to follow it regularly.

Currently, His Holiness Dr. Jayant Athavale sits to chant for the benefit of seekers worldwide, during two time slots, namely 7:30am-8am and 4pm to 5pm, Indian Standard Time (IST). One can derive the benefits of His resolve and blessings behind these chanting sessions, by setting aside time to chant during any or both of these sessions daily (at one's local time corresponding to the above mentioned time slots in IST). Seekers worldwide have had good spiritual experiences when chanting during these time slots, amply indicating the power of a Saint's resolve.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one's current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
