Deep chanting* after getting a vision of Jesus

One day, while waiting for somebody on the street corner, I got drawn to a nearby church. At the very entrance, there was a statue of Jesus in Mother Mary's arms after He was taken down from the cross (similar to the famous Michelangelo statue 'Pieta'). Looking at the statue, I felt an amazing urge to embrace Jesus! I could somehow manage to hold myself back from doing so, thinking that I would probably be thrown out for touching the statue. In the statue, both, Mother Mary and Jesus had immense suffering on their faces. Mother Mary was looking up with eyes full of tears and Jesus was dying. His wounds from the piercing were bleeding. However, in that sad look of His, I saw a smile, a very warm, dear smile. Then, my eyesight dimmed, and I saw very clearly that He was breathing, and His stomach was moving up and down. I was breathing deeply, really deeply, chanting 'Isus', 'Isus', 'Isus' ('Jesus' in my native language).

- A seeker.
[The above experience shows the seeker's level of devotion, that she felt spontaneously drawn to a Holy place and felt such intense love for God that she felt one with the statue of Mother Mary and Jesus. When such devotion or spiritual emotion is activated, spiritual practice like chanting occurs effortlessly and with deep intensity. However, to experience such devotion too, regular spiritual practice is needed.

Spontaneous confirmation of inner guidance

This incident took place just before I undertook the spiritual path, a couple of days before meeting a spiritual guide. I was taking a shower and spontaneously started repeating, or singing, "Ave Maria" ('Hail Mary'). After I realized what I was doing, I felt afraid, as I thought I was losing my mind. However, two days later, I met this seeker, who told me that in order to start growing spiritually, I should start chanting "Hail Mary" or in my language, "Ave Maria." Seeing this as a message from God and a confirmation to my experience in the shower a couple of days ago, I immediately undertook the spiritual practice of chanting daily for at least an hour.

- A seeker.
[Spiritual experiences like these are given to increase the seeker's faith in the spiritual practice he is undertaking. Taking positive reinforcement from such experiences of oneself and others, one can undertake daily spiritual practice* with faith.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one’s current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
