Need For Spirituality
Spiritual practice* for a progressive and peaceful society

An issue of the Teen Plus magazine in Kragujevac, Yugoslavia, has published a thought-provoking poem written by a 13-year old girl. In this poem, the girl, hailing from war-torn Serbia, asks the question, ‘What kind of a world is the one full of pain, of fear, of poor, of sick, of hunger and sadness?’ The poem urges good people to make this world a better place.

Many such poems and articles by youth abound in publications around Serbia. The tragic poem is representative of the sense of hopelessness and foreboding that the youth of Serbia carried due to the war.

It is sad when youth at such a tender age have to witness painful events, such as wars. That this is not confined to Serbia, but prevails almost in every part of the world, makes it all the more heart rending. It is little wonder that a sense of hopelessness prevails among the youth.

The overall increase in negative aspects, such as wars, poverty, etc., is caused by the decrease in spiritual purity (sattva) in society, due to a general decline in spiritual practice*. Thus, regular spiritual practice, which alone can increase spiritual purity, is the only way to acquire divine protection from the effects of such negativity. Further, as one’s spiritual purity increases, it contributes to the increase in spiritual purity in society. Thus, motivating others to do spiritual practice by educating them about its benefits would contribute to overall reduction in negativity and unhappiness in society.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, or to complement one’s current spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
