Recognizing the causes of one’s unhappiness
Question: “How does one know whether the unhappiness one is undergoing is due to Destiny (karma), willful action or any other factor? Also, is there any way of knowing whether one is suffering from mild, medium or severe Destiny?”
- Mr. Glenn and Mrs. Sampada Pereira, Dubai, UAE.

Answer: Only spiritually evolved individuals (at over 60% spiritual level) can correctly diagnose the cause of one's unhappiness and whether one is suffering from mild, medium or severe Destiny. Hence, one who wants to determine firsthand the causes of one's unhappiness would have to attain the requisite spiritual level through regular spiritual practice. The following points are also helpful in getting an idea whether one’s problems have spiritual causes, and the severity of one’s spiritual problems or Destiny:

  • Mild Destiny is indicated by minor illnesses, above average efforts required to get married or to get success in any project, etc. Moderate Destiny is indicated by minor accidents, tremendous efforts needed for getting married or success in any project, etc. Severe Destiny is indicated by major, even fatal accidents, inability to get married or success in any project despite tremendous efforts, etc. From this, one can gauge with the intellect whether one is suffering from mild, moderate or severe Destiny.

  • According to the science of Spirituality, on the average about 80% of an individual's unhappiness stems partly or purely from spiritual causes. Thus, whether one's unhappiness is caused by willful action, such as incorrect actions arising from one's shortcomings or mistakes, or spiritual factors, such as Destiny, distressing energy, etc., regular spiritual practice is the effective solution. Spiritual practice not only helps reduce the influence of spiritual factors, but also helps reduce one's psychological defects like anger, fear, etc. Thus, it helps eliminate most causes of unhappiness. It is helpful to note that the greater the severity of Destiny, the greater the intensity of spiritual practice needed to overcome it.

Thus, to lastingly overcome the unhappiness or problems in life, it is important to focus on performing spiritual practice with as much intensity as possible.
