Practical Guidance
On how to remind oneself to chant*, to become more and more spiritual

When doing the spiritual practice of chanting, one often finds that different thoughts prevent one from achieving continuous, deep chanting. To achieve this goal one needs to be constantly reminded to chant, as below.

  • External tool: One can use tools like a tally counter or a mala to keep a count of the chant. When it is not possible to use such tools due to conspicuity, one can resort to counting the chant on one's fingers.

  • Chanting strips: Write the chant that one chants on strips of paper and if possible, affix these strips in places that one frequents. For example, one can stick strips of the chant on the walls of the rooms in one's home or, on one's desk, on the mirror, at the top of the television set, computer monitor, etc. Such strips can also be put up on one's desk at work if possible or even in one's car to remind one to chant while driving.

  • Place pictures in and around one's home of the divine Principle or deity, whose Name one chants.

  • Whenever one does not feel like chanting, one can remind oneself of its benefits, such as imparting concentration, peace, Bliss, inner strength, protection from problems with spiritual causes, etc, .

  • Use autosuggestions. For example, before going to bed every night, one can repeat to oneself 15-20 times the following, 'When my mind starts wandering while chanting I will become aware of it and will be able to concentrate on chanting,' or 'Whenever I am not talking or not thinking of anything useful, I will become aware of it and start chanting.'

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
