Need For Spirituality
Tribute to George Harrison resonates the importance of Spirituality

A tribute on the death of George Harrison, a member of the world’s most famous pop group, The Beatles, read: ‘George Harrison always shunned the limelight. He soon grew weary of Beatlemania, as the group rushed from concert to concert in stretch limousines. Harrison, the youngest member of the world’s most famous pop group will be remembered for his devotion to Oriental mysticism. It was he who persuaded fellow Beatles to fly to India and sit at the feet of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. A long time devotee of the religious group Hare Krishna, Harrison was always in search of religious meaning in his life. “When you have had all the experiences, met all the famous people, made some money, toured the world and got all the acclaim, you still think, ‘Is that it?’ Some people might be satisfied with that, but I wasn’t.” he once said.’

The fact that despite all the fame and worldly achievements, George Harrison sought Spirituality for true satisfaction, underlines the inadequacy of material success in bringing about true, lasting happiness. It is a reminder that in order to attain Bliss or lasting happiness of the highest quality, the source one taps into has to be Blissful in nature. Since God is the only such source, spiritual practice or efforts towards God-realization alone can yield Bliss.

Harrison’s life also serves as an example of the possibility of doing regular spiritual practice regardless of one’s lifestyle. Chanting* The Lord’s Name is the recommended spiritual practice for today’s busy times, as it can be done any time, anywhere and during other activities. Thus, chanting it is a relatively easy, but powerful spiritual practice to progress towards experiencing Bliss.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
