Implied Meaning
Living in the present

“When they had brought them outside, they said, “Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the Plain; flee to the hills, or else you will be consumed.” Then the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrah sulfur and fire from the LORD out of heaven; and he overthrew those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lot’s wife, behind him, looked back and she became a pillar of salt.”

- The Holy Bible, Genesis 19.17, 24-26.

Explanation:

God’s angels were commanded to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. Since Lot was the only God-fearing man there, they told him and his family to flee the city before its destruction. They also warned him that if they looked back they would be consumed. Lot and his family escaped, but his wife could not resist looking back at the burning city. As soon as she did this, she was turned into a pillar of salt.

A seeker is not supposed to look back, that is, think of the past; but should learn to live in the present. This is possible only when one concentrates on chanting* all the time. A pillar signifies stagnation.

[Often a disciple, who had come to pay his respects to His Holiness Bhaktaraj Maharaj (Baba), was caught unawares when Baba would tell him, “Sit in the car (for traveling with Baba).” Since it was Baba who decided everything, including the time of departure, the destination, the time of arrival, when to halt for meals, the meal to be served, etc., and since there were changes in these arrangements every so often, the disciple continually learned to live in the present. Refer to Vol. 4: Path of Guru's Grace published by the Sanatan.]

–The Sanatan's publication, Science of Spirituality as in The Holy Bible.

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion. Chanting also acts as a useful complement to any spiritual path one may be already following. It is a practice recommended for the current times by Holy texts and Saints of all religions.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
