Practical Guidance
Doing work with prayer, or any activity as spiritual practice

In today's busy times, however much one may desire to be constantly in divine awareness and do spiritual practice, one experiences limitations due to various worldly duties. Therefore, as the next step in one's spiritual practice, one should try to do every activity that one does as one's spiritual practice. Praying before an activity helps one to have divine awareness during the activity.

Tips on prayer

One can first pray as soon as one wakes up in the morning. The prayer should be on the following lines:

"O Lord, let me not take credit for this day’s activities, but realize that You only are getting them done. Let every activity be done as worship to You and let it result in the purification of my mind, intellect and ego. Let my chanting* go on continuously during all the activities."

From that moment onwards, until one goes to sleep, one can say the following prayer before every activity, however small, that one does. It is helpful to include the following parts in the prayer.

1. Let the “credit” for each activity be given to The Lord.
2. Let the activity be done as worship.
3. Let it result in the purification of one's mind, intellect and ego.
4. Let one's chanting* go on continuously during the activity.

Example of doing an activity as worship or spiritual practice

An example of doing every activity as spiritual practice can be the activity of handing a glass of water to someone. One can imagine how one would hand a glass of water to The Lord Himself and how Blissful one would feel while doing so. Hence, while doing it for one's parents, spouse, child or colleague, if one behaves in the same spirit, one will derive the same joy and fulfillment. The simple act of saying a prayer before doing an activity, say of handing over the glass of water, also acts as a reminder to have an attitude of service and humility, to remember God, and to do the activity as worship or spiritual practice. Naturally, one derives benefits accordingly.

* Refer to Issue 23, Clarification of Doubts section for details about the mechanism of the mind and that of chanting (repeating God’s Name). If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
