The power of the appropriate Spiritual Practice
Question: Within a few weeks of commencing the spiritual practice of chanting* God’s Name as per my religion and also the chant ‘Sri Gurudev Datta’, I saw major positive changes in my worldly life. How is it possible that worldly situations can change so much with such little spiritual practice?
- Mr. Abhijeet, Brisbane, Australia.

The reasons for the major positive changes in your worldly life within a few weeks of starting the spiritual practice of chanting The Lord's Name can be explained as follows:

  1. The aim of spiritual practice is spiritual progress for which faith is a major factor. The appropriate spiritual practice results in spiritual experiences, which help increase one's faith in the spiritual practice.

  2. These spiritual experiences are an indication that one is on the right path.

  3. Spirituality, like any other science, is based on certain basic principles. When spiritual practice is done in accordance with these principles, it yields rapid results in the form of spiritual experiences. One of the basic principles of Spirituality is that every problem has a specific spiritual solution just like in medical science every disease has a specific cure.

  4. Some major obstacles to one's spiritual progress are one’s Destiny and the influence of distressing energies. The Lord's Name per one's religion is the specific spiritual solution or energy required to overcome one's Destiny. Therefore, chanting that particular Name of the Lord reduces one's Destiny, thereby decreasing one’s worldly obstacles to spiritual practice and augmenting one’s spiritual growth.

  5. The Lord Datta chant is the specific spiritual solution or energy to counteract the influence of distressing energies of the ancestral type. Hence, the spiritual practice of chanting ‘Sri Gurudev Datta’ results in removal of such obstacles to spiritual practice caused by these distressing energies.

* Refer to Issue 23, Clarification of Doubts section for details about the mechanism of the mind and that of chanting (repeating God’s Name). If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).

  • Seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
