Woman allegedly raped by a yoga teacher: understanding the
science of Spirituality for protection against fake spiritual teachers

Manali, India – Police have launched a hunt for a self-styled yoga teacher after a French woman claimed he had allegedly hypnotized and raped her in a resort town in Himachal Pradesh. The 34-year-old French woman and her Swiss boyfriend lodged the complaint late Thursday, three days after the alleged incident occurred in a guesthouse in Manali.

"The victim alleged that a yoga teacher, Swami Surinder, raped her under the pretext of teaching her 'Japanese yoga'," said Deputy Superintendent of Police Kushal Sharma, an official in Manali, investigating the case. "Apparently the victim was asked to strip so that pressure points all over the body could be pressed to release energy. During this process, she was raped while she lay in deep hypnosis," said Sharma.

When the woman was asked why she took so long to file a complaint, the woman said she spoke to her boyfriend and another French friend in Manali a day after the incident. "After checking the Internet on 'Japanese yoga' and speaking to the French embassy in New Delhi, they decided to finally tell the police," Sharma said. It seems that the yoga teacher left the guesthouse early on Friday.

"Late on Friday, we sent a police team to Pathankot town in Punjab, according to the address given by the yogi in the guesthouse's register. His master also lives there," the Deputy Superintendent of Police said.

Regardless of whether the woman’s account is proven to be true, it highlights the fraudulent practices of fake spiritual teachers or healers. One can imagine the distrust about Spirituality, besides the pain, that such an experience would leave the victim with.

According to the science of Spirituality, most of the so-called spiritual teachers today are fake. It requires exceptional spiritual level to recognize a true spiritual authority. Therefore, without understanding the science of Spirituality, even sincerely spiritually seeking people can fall victim to such frauds.

Bearing this in mind, it is essential for any spiritually inclined individual to learn the science and basic principles of Spirituality to undertake real spiritual practice* and experience its amazing benefits like peace, Bliss and reduction in problems. Regular study** and practice of Spirituality would not only make one well equipped in the pursuit of spiritual guidance, but also bring about rapid spiritual progress.

* If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).
  • Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.

** The study of Spirituality is practice-oriented, as the science of Spirituality is a science of practice and actual experience. Refer to Issue 66, , Clarification of Doubts section for suggestions on how to study Spirituality.
