Distress from the spiritual practice of chanting*
Question: For the past two years I have been doing the spiritual practice of chanting* according to the guidance of the Sanatan organization. Currently, I am chanting The Lord’s Name according to my religion (the Name of our Kuldevata). In the past, I have also done other chants, such as that from the seven-chant experiment. I experience some physical distress from any chant. Why is that?
- A reader.

Dear Reader,

The reasons for distress while chanting could be:

Currently, there is a tremendous rise in distressing energy obstruction to spiritual practice and life in general. You could be experiencing this obstruction in the form of distress.
Most people are affected by distressing energies today. As a result, when chanting, we become a “battleground” for the subtle “battle” between the positive energy generated by chanting and the distressing energy troubling the individual. Thus, the distress from chanting is actually an indicator that the chant is working to remove the distressing energy. It is similar to having a medicine like an antibiotic for acne that takes effect by first bringing out the problem (acne) with intensity and then removing it.

The following points are noteworthy in this regard:

Seekers around the world have experienced firsthand that as we persevere with spiritual practice, the distress reduces and one’s spiritual practice becomes smooth.
The seven-chant experiment is to determine the exact Name of The Lord to chant for one’s spiritual constitution and specific distressing energy obstruction. For individuals who have chanted regularly for over a year, as you have done, it is suitable to find the Name to chant from the seven-chant experiment. It will most effectively and rapidly overcome the obstruction to spiritual practice and progress. Since distressing energies may keep changing the form of the obstruction, it is suitable to find out the exact chant every 15 days. As given in the experiment steps, if one experiences no distress from any of the seven chants, it would indicate the absence of distressing energy obstruction. In that case, one can focus on chanting The Lord’s Name according to one’s religion (Kuldevata).

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).
  • Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
