The royal court singer and ascetic

Once there was a competition between two great singers, Tansen, a singer from King Akbar’s court, and Baiju Bawra, a spiritually evolved ascetic. They both sang a musical tune called ‘Deep raga’. If sung correctly, this tune produces energy that can light a lamp (‘deep’ in Sanskrit).

When Tansen started singing this tune, lamps started lighting up, and there was so much heat generated that he got a burning sensation all over his body and suffered from burns. He had to sing another tune called ‘Malhar raga’ to bring about cooling rains. However, Baiju bawra did not feel any difficulties after singing ‘Deep raga’.

Moral: Dear friends, Tansen, being the royal court singer, had a lot of ego and sang to please the king and the onlookers. As a result, he suffered from burns, even though he was skilled. However, Baiju Bawra had less ego; he sang only to please God. To become humble like Baiju Bawra, we can pray to God before every activity asking Him for His blessings to do the activity how He likes it to be done. After the activity is over, we can express gratitude to God, that it was only because of His blessings and not our expertise that the activity was done.

Spiritual experience of a child seeker

Desire to grow up to be a Saint after attending satsangs

For the past few months, I have been attending the children’s satsangs held in Woodbridge. At one satsang we were taught about Saints. In school last year, we were asked what we wanted to be when we grow up. I had said that I want to be a doctor. However, after attending satsangs and learning about Saints, I have decided that I want to be a Saint when I grow up.

-- Ms. Adityaa Shukla (Age 5),
The Sanatan organization’s children’s satsang in Woodbridge (NJ), USA.

[Children are naturally pure (sattvik). Satsangs nourish this purity in children by teaching about God and Saints. Thus, even little satsang attendees like Adityaa feel inspired to grow close to God, like Saints did.
