Lord Krishna lifts Govardhan Mountain

Every year, the people of Vrindavan (town in North India, where Lord Krishna grew up) worshipped Lord Indra for rain. One year, when Lord Krishna was a young boy, He asked Nanda, king of Vrindavan, to worship Govardhan Mountain, because it protected the village and stopped the clouds there for rain.

King Nanda agreed with Lord Krishna. The people of Vrindavan prepared to worship Govardhan Mountain. This made Lord Indra angry. Lord Indra thought, "These cowherd men in Vrindavan have ignored My authority. I will teach them a lesson." Lord Indra then sent a storm to destroy Vrindavan.

The cowherds of Vrindavan had great faith in Lord Krishna. All the people and animals of the town rushed to Him for shelter. Immediately, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain with one finger to make a huge umbrella for them! Everyone was grateful to Lord Krishna and took shelter under the mountain as though it was an umbrella. Seeing this, Lord Indra realized His mistake in attacking Lord Krishna’s devotees. He apologized to Lord Krishna and stopped the rain.

Moral: The above story shows the immense power of God. When we pray to God or Saints with complete faith that They will help us, They help us beyond our imagination, as in the above story. Similarly, we should learn to turn to God and Saints with full faith. Repeating (chanting*) God's Name every day, and sincerely praying before every thing we do, will help us develop the kind of faith that the cowherds had.

Spiritual experience of a child seeker

Scoring full marks in a school test after chanting*

For the past few months, I have been attending the children’s satsang held in Stamford. I always try to chant* Lord Ganesh’s Name as taught in the satsang. Recently, I decided to chant the day before my school test. I scored full marks in that test.

- Master Jonathan (age 8),
The Sanatan organization’s children’s satsang in Stamford (CT), USA.
[Chanting not only brings us God’s love and protection, but also helps us build concentration. This helps us do well in school tests, as it helped Jonathan.
- Editor.]

* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord's Name as per our religion. Young children should also chant 'Om Gan Ganapataye namaha' (Lored Ganesh's chant) for at least 15-30 minutes daily for divine protection. Older children, who have been doing spiritual practice for some time, can find out their exact chant from the experiment in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section. Parents should repeat (chant) The Lord's Name for children too young to do so for themselves.
