Every year, the people of
Vrindavan (town in North India, where Lord Krishna grew up) worshipped Lord
Indra for rain. One year, when Lord Krishna was a young boy, He asked
Nanda, king of Vrindavan, to worship Govardhan Mountain, because it protected
the village and stopped the clouds there for rain.
King Nanda agreed with Lord Krishna. The people
of Vrindavan prepared to worship Govardhan Mountain. This made Lord Indra
angry. Lord Indra thought, "These cowherd men in Vrindavan have ignored
My authority. I will teach them a lesson." Lord Indra then sent a
storm to destroy Vrindavan.
The cowherds of Vrindavan had great faith in
Lord Krishna. All the people and animals of the town rushed to Him for
shelter. Immediately, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Mountain with one
finger to make a huge umbrella for them! Everyone was grateful to Lord
Krishna and took shelter under the mountain as though it was an umbrella.
Seeing this, Lord Indra realized His mistake in attacking Lord Krishna’s
devotees. He apologized to Lord Krishna and stopped the rain. |
