God creates the world – The tying up to mortar

Lord Krishna’s childhood was spent with His mother, Yashoda and His father, King Nanda, in the city of Gokul. Mother Yashoda never hit Lord Krishna. However, once, when He stole butter and fed it to the monkeys, she tied Him to a grinding mortar (a mortar is a strong bow-like vessel in which substances are crushed or pounded). As she tried to tie him, the rope was too short. Amazingly, she kept using a longer rope, but it always came up to be too short. Finally, Lord Krishna appreciated the hard labor of His mother, and being compassionate, He agreed to be bound up by the ropes.

After some time, Lord Krishna tried to crawl away. As He did so, at one place the mortar stuck between two trees in the courtyard. As He moved forward, the trees fell and two splendorous Deities emerged and offered prayers to Him. The Deities told Lord Krishna that long ago, a sage had cursed Them to stand as trees for one hundred years. Now, finally, because of Lord Krishna’s Divine power, the Deities were freed of the curse.

Moral: The story of Lord Krishna’s childhood shows how powerful and loving God is. Even Deities Who were cursed were freed because of Lord Krishna. If we have the grace of the mighty and powerful Lord, He will constantly look after us. By praying to God everyday and remembering Him by chanting* (repeating) His Name in everything we do – be it getting ready, eating, walking, playing or going to bed-- we can build faith in God and win His grace.

Cured of a wart after prayer

For the past few months, I have been attending the children’s satsangs held in Woodbridge. I try to chant* everyday as taught in the satsang.

Some time back, I was getting a wart on my foot. It would not go even after going to the doctor’s and taking medicine. It would go for some time, but come right back in a few days. In the satsang we were encouraged to ask God for help when we needed it. So I prayed to God to cure me of the wart. After saying the prayer, my wart disappeared and did not come back.

- Ms. Aditi Shankar (age 5),
The Sanatan organization’s children’s satsang in Woodbridge (NJ), USA.

[Sometimes a disease can be due to spiritual reasons like distressing energies, or impurity (raja-tama) in us. Therefore, only spiritual practice like chanting* and prayers with all our heart can make us spiritually pure (sattvik) and completely take away the spiritual problem, as seen above.

From the above spiritual experience, we have seen that when Aditi said a sincere prayer to God for help, He graced her by curing her. Many times when we are sick we experience that all the efforts we are taking to become better are not working. In those situations, like Aditi, we can learn to say such sincere prayers to God. By saying such prayers, our faith in God grows and we come closer to God and seek His blessings for every thing that we do.

* Constantly remembering or repeating God’s Name as per our religion. Young children should also chant 'Om Gan Ganapataye namaha' (Lord Ganesh's chant) for at least 15-30 minutes daily for divine protection. Older children, who have been doing spiritual practice for some time, can find out their exact chant from the experiment in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section. Parents should repeat (chant) The Lord's Name for children too young to do so for themselves.
