Behavior of a seven-year-old suddenly changing from stubborn to obedient after praying to remove any black energy around him

One day, my seven-year-old son was behaving very stubbornly. He had to eat his food and he was not eating, which was making us late for his classes. I did not want to start a power struggle. I just kept quiet and looked at him and began chanting* with the prayer "God, please remove the black (distressing) energy around him." After about seven chants, he suddenly changed his mind and was very obedient. He ate his food and did exactly as told, so that we would not be late for school.

- Mrs. Kiran van de Ven, The Netherlands.
[The above experience shows us the importance of being alert by making specific prayer and chanting during difficult moments. At present, distressing energies are troubling seekers by creating a black covering around their intellect, which causes them to act and think out of character. Developing a fighting spirit (kshatravrutti), or the qualities of alertness and promptness to fight against distressing energies, is the need of the hour. Since the seeker in the above experience possessed these qualities, the affected child seeker was immediately released from the influence of the distressing energies.

Prayer and surrender unto His Holiness (H.H.) Dr. Jayant Athavale, Goddess Durgadevi and Lord Hanuman resulting being able to chant* well

Recently, I was very tired and was not able to chant well (that is, chanting that is done with spiritual emotion, fighting spirit and concentration). At one time during that period, while doing aarti (ritual of waving of lit lamps), I prayed with desperation to H.H. Dr. Athavale to give me strength and to take care of me. While singing the hymn 'Jyot se jyot jagao', I was in tears, and felt as if I was a small baby with out-stretched arms, lying in surrender at His feet. Suddenly, I saw Sri Durgadevi smiling at me, just as a mother smiles at her little baby. The next moment, I saw H.H. Dr. Athavale’s feet, which were all blue. After the aarti was over, I was doing the vastu chant (chanting done for the purification of the house) in the bedroom. I prayed to Lord Hanuman that just as He got a seat at Lord Rama's feet, I also wish to get a seat at H.H. Dr. Athavale’s feet. At that moment, Lord Hanuman transformed into H.H. Dr. Athavale in the photo and I saw that it was shining blue light. After that, I was able to chant very deeply for the rest of the day.

- Mrs. Shobhana Shet, Melbourne, Australia.

[From the above experience, we learn the importance of complete surrender and sincere prayer. In this case, the seeker was begging to feel devotion for The Lord, since she was having trouble doing spiritual practice per God’s expectation. She was graced with the feeling of innocence and surrender that a child has towards its mother, towards H.H. Dr. Athavale. The seeker’s intense desire of wanting to be at the Guru’s feet, resulted in Guru / God acknowledging the prayer and surrender by giving the seeker the subtle vision of the Guru’s holy feet in blue and the transformation of Lord Hanuman to H.H. Dr. Athavale.

This experience, in turn, helped the seeker in chanting well.

If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).
  • Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
