Feeling inspiration and motivation for spiritual practice after surrendering to H. H. Dr. Jayant Athavale

One day recently, I was feeling a lack of something. This feeling was not sorrow or loneliness, but was a hunger of some sort. I could not derive any satisfaction from anything. Then I surrendered to His Holiness (H. H.) Dr. Jayant Athavale and prayed that I do not know what this feeling is, but please teach me how to overcome it. Immediately, I felt like reading something, so I tried to read various publications of the Sanatan organization, but the feeling still persisted.

Again I surrendered to Him. Then an idea occurred to me that maybe I should take a print out of the teachings of given through Sanatan seeker Ram Honap*. So, I printed out the teachings. At this point, the feeling of hunger reduced. Then I could not do anything else but read the printed book, as I could relate to it better in print than on the computer screen. I did not realize when I had finished reading the entire book. I was filled with inspiration and motivation for spiritual practice, and my chanting** increased thereafter. It was His grace that He taught me how to overcome that feeling of hunger.

[Spirituality, being the science about God, is unending knowledge. However, as H. H. Bhaktaraj Maharaj has said, “Only the curious are deserving of Knowledge.” The seeker above did not know that he had the necessary desire or curiosity. However, when he surrendered to God, God satisfied his divine curiosity. We, too, may not be aware of all our qualities and defects on the spiritual journey, but God knows them. Hence, surrendering to Him ensures good spiritual practice, as seen above.

Smooth chanting* after persevering and frequent prayers

Recently, just before sitting for chanting, I started feeling weak with body pain and heaviness in the head. I thought of taking some rest, but then remembered a spiritual experience of another seeker, who had a spiritual experience of getting energy from chanting in similar circumstances after persevering. So I also sat for chanting instead of giving in to the urge to rest. Initially it was difficult to concentrate, but after every five minutes of chanting, I said a prayer to God to help me chant with spiritual emotion (bhav). Thus, I could complete an hour of chanting that was good in quality.

[From this spiritual experience we learn how important it is to share our spiritual experiences, since they may give encouragement to another seeker at some point. The seeker in this case wanted to give in to her physical problems, but persevered after remembering another seeker’s spiritual experience. Further, after resorting to repeated prayer, she was graced with the ability to go beyond the physical distress and experience good chanting, both in quality and quantity.

*Through Sanatan seeker Ram Honap, Sanatan seekers have received invaluable teachings from Goddess Durgadevi, as well as from Sages of higher planes (loks)

*If one is not currently doing any spiritual practice, one can begin with the simple, but powerful spiritual practice of chanting or constantly remembering God's Name according to one's religion.

  • Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) can repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3 Clarification of Doubts section for details).
  • Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over a year or so can determine the appropriate chant for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
