Pleasing the Guru

Perceive the Guru’s wish and act accordingly

“That slave who knew what his master wanted, but did not prepare himself or do what was wanted, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from the one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.”

- The Holy Bible, Luke 12:47-48.

Implied Meaning:

‘Slave’ refers to a seeker and ‘master’ to the Guru. A seeker has to always live up to the expectations of his Guru. If the seeker disobeys the Guru and does not do spiritual practice or the Guru’s work as per the Guru’s expectation, he does not experience the Guru’s grace. A seeker who does not know what is expected of him, but does his work with faith and devotion will be reprimanded by the Guru (but will still experience the Guru’s grace).

A disciple imparted with spiritual knowledge is expected to spread it to others. This is the supreme service that he can offer unto the Guru.

[Once H. H. Bhaktaraj Maharaj’s (Baba) Guru, H. H. Anantanand Saish, asked Baba for an account of how He had spent the five rupees, which Sri Saish had given Him. In response, Baba wrote a devotional song (bhajan), which the Guru expected of Him.]
