Important components of spiritual practice to reduce ego – Part 4

So far we have studied about ego, its origin, its effects, losses incurred due to it, types of ego, spiritually evolved people and ego, etc. From the Issue 222, we have started discussing various ways to reduce ego through spiritual practice. In this Issue, we will continue that discussion.

The important components of spiritual practice to reduce ego are:

Service
Sacrifice
Spiritual love without expectation (priti)
Repetition (chanting*) of The Lord’s Name

In the last Issue 223 we studied some points about service. In this issue we will discuss about sacrifice and spiritual love.

In the last Issue we discussed about sacrifice and spiritual love. In this Issue we will study how chanting* helps to decrease ego.

Chanting of The Lord’s Name:
“When one is adopted by someone, one has to forget one’s former name and change to the new one to inherit his property. Similarly to acquire The Lord’s grace, one has to forget ego and one’s own name (identity), and repeat (chant) His Name. The Lord’s Name is the means to forget one’s state of ego. A seeker should get engrossed in repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name, forgetting oneself, should blend with The Name.”

"When chanting The Lord’s Name is going on, at least for that period of time there is no ego. Any thought arising in the mind while chanting is going on can be overcome with prayer. As against this, it takes a long time to overcome a thought arising in the mind when chanting is not going on and one has really struggle against the mind to overcome the thoughts. “One should not harbor the emotion that ‘I am repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name’ but the spiritual emotion that ‘God or the Guru is getting repetition (chanting) of The Lord’s Name done from me’. As a result, one does not develop ego about chanting. In the Holy company (satsang) of a Saint chanting The Lord’s Name occurs automatically due to His energy. Hence the emotion that ‘I am repeating The Lord’s Name”, that is ego about spiritual practice does not occur.”

In the next Issue, we will see the comparative importance of various components of spiritual practice from the point of reducing ego.

- Based on the Sanatan's publication,

*Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord’s Name. When done mentally, it can be done anywhere and anytime, as it does not need purity of body, time or place. However, in the initial stages it is recommended that one start by sitting in one place for at least half an hour daily and repeat (chant) The Name of one’s Kuldevata or per their religion (refer to Issue 3, Clarification of Doubts section for details on what Name to repeat according to one’s religion.) Those in the advanced stages and who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over one year are advised to determine The Name appropriate for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Messages to Seekers section.
