How to celebrate a birthday according to the science of Spirituality so as to obtain maximum benefit

Birthdays have been celebrated since ancient times. Here are some salient points regarding how to celebrate a birthday according to the science of Spirituality.

1.
Celebrating birthday according to the Lunar calendar: According to the science of Spirituality the vibrations which are generated on the day we were born as per the lunar calendar matches the most with us. So, on this day we are benefited most by the good wishes given to us by our relatives and friends. So one should celebrate birthdays as per the lunar calendar.
2.
Worshipping our family deity or the principle worshipped in the religion we were born in): One should celebrate birthdays in the presence of and with the good wishes of our family deity or the principle worshipped in the religion we were born in. If we believe in a deity with form, we should perform the ritual of abhishek (a type of a ritualistic worship done by sprinkling of holy water on the icon of the deity) to our family deity.
3.
Fragrant oil should be applied to the body of the person whose birthday it is before he or she takes a bath early in the morning. The clothes worn before taking the bath by that person should be donated and new clothes should be worn.
4. Then person (whose birthday it is) should sit on a mat, which is surrounded and decorated with rangoli (white marble powder). Then the ritual of lighting lamps (aarti) should be performed. Place lamps lit with ghee (clarified butter) on a plate on which a swastik (an auspicious Hindu sign) has been drawn. The number of lamps kept on the swastik should be equal to the age of the person. Some respected elderly person, such as the father or the mother should place the middle lamp and friends and relatives can place the rest of the lamps. The person should be applied vermilion and the lighted lamps should be moved around the person in a clockwise motion.
5. Prayers: The first 9 verses (shlokas) from Ramraksha stotra should be recited while holding unbroken consecrated rice grains in both hands. These verses ask for protection of each of our body parts. While reciting the verses we must put some rice grains on each corresponding body part.
6. Food offering : Then we must make a offering of food to the family deity or the principle worshipped in the religion we are born in and pray for a long life, good education and good health and ask for protection for the person whose birthday it is.
7. We could distribute sweets to the people who are present. One should not accept presents from anybody on this day.

Below are some special tips -

Note 1: One should not extinguish candles after lighting them on your birthday. Extinguishing lamps is considered as inauspicious. Also, candles have Tama component in them, hence for maximum spiritual benefit one should light lamps with either ghee (clarified butter) or oil instead

Note 2: One should not cut a cake using knifes. Knife is a weapon and cutting food materials using a weapon is considered inauspicious on this day.
