Saints' Quotes

Assuaging the ego

“It will not be so among you; but whoever wishes to be great among you must be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you must be your slave. Just as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”

- The Holy Bible, Matthew 20.26-28.

Implied Meaning:

Serving others with humility just like Jesus did is the best way to assuage the ego. Union with God lies in dissolution of ego*, which is the aim of all spiritual practice.

Ego is a major hurdle in one’s spiritual as well as material progress. Overcoming ego is the very aim of spiritual practice, but since the ego is deeply rooted in us it is difficult to overcome the ego with spiritual practice alone. Hence, instead of waiting for the ego to be overcome with spiritual practice alone, the seeker should make conscious efforts for ego removal.

* Refer to Issue 214-218, Spiritual Practice for Destroying Ego section for Losses incurred due to ego and importance of dissolving ego to a seeker.
