Practical Guidance
    H. H. Dr. Jayant Athavale conducts weekly satsangs in the various centers of the Sanatan throughout India. These encompass several topics, such as spiritual practice, Saints, Deities, the science of Spirituality, etc. Below are some of the points He shared with seekers in a recent satsang.

It is necessary to minimize mistakes in order to merge with God

Seekers’ mistakes are discussed in the satsangs held at various ashrams (hermitage) of the Sanatan organization. A disciple of H. H. Dadaji Vaishampayan really appreciated this aspect of the satsangs, when he witnessed it at the Devad (Panvel, India) ashram. The disciple said, ‘We have attended so many satsangs of different sects, but we really like the Sanatan’s satsangs where the seekers’ mistakes and not just the basic (spiritual) philosophy that everyone is familiar with, are discussed.’

When a seeker makes mistakes, his spiritual progress is virtually impossible. God does not make a single mistake. If we keep committing mistakes, our spiritual progress is nil or very slow. When Sri Durgadevi visited the Sanatan’s ashrams, She too pointed out mistakes, for example, ‘the karanjis (a sweet made of sugar coconut and covered in a wheat flour puff pastry) offered to Her being too sweet’, ‘the lit oil lamps used for decoration obstructing the pathway’, etc. Sri Durgadevi did not speak about Spirituality or spiritual practice. God expects that we commit fewer and fewer mistakes. When we commit few mistakes, we acquire the corresponding good quality, just as removal of darkness itself means illumination.

Importance of praying to God for the correct reasons

While it is important to pray to God, the reason we pray to God is equally important. A seeker, who was forgetful and not prompt, would pray to God to remind her to do her satseva. Is God our personal assistant that we may ask Him to remind us about things? It is incorrect to ask God for help to do a satseva without first making any efforts oneself and doing proper planning. Whenever we perform any action, we must introspect to find out if the action occurred at a physical, psychological or spiritual level. If we commit a mistake due to being affected by distressing energies, it is okay (acceptable) to pray for help since we cannot do anything about it, except fight the distressing energies. But we must try to improve ourselves as far as mistakes (due to shortcomings) at the level of the mind and intellect are concerned, by making conscious efforts to overcome our personality defects*. We must strive to perform all actions promptly.
