Actions/efforts to awaken spiritual emotion in an individual

(Continued from Issue 222)

To awaken spiritual emotion rapidly, initially one needs to make constant efforts at the level of the mind and intellect. In the last issue 222 we saw examples of spiritual experience by expressing gratitude.

Spiritual Experience by expression of gratitude :

When despite me not making a mistake another seeker says that I have made a mistake, I feel grateful to the Guru as He is doing all this only to take me to the next level of spiritual progress. Thereafter I am unaffected about that incident.

- A seeker, Goa, India.
A seeker is thankful to distressing energies as their troubling him draws H.H. Dr. Athavale’s attention towards him

I was severely afflicted with distressing energies. I was literally combating them constantly. Once when Mr. Panvalkar (a seeker of Sanatan) visited the Dhamse (in Goa, India) ashram (hermitage) he said, “We have to fight distressing energies. To fight them we have a powerful weapon with us that is love. Use it to fight them.” Since then I began speaking to these distressing energies with affection, ‘Who are you and what do you want from me? I want to devote myself to the cause of reinstating Righteousness (Dharma). If I have troubled you in the past birth, please forgive me, but please do not obstruct my spiritual practice. You, too, can repeat (chant) The Lord’s Name. The distress that you are experiencing will go away, and you will be able to make progress.’ I would constantly make this prayer unto them. They would ridicule this prayer but I would still surrender and pay obescience and say, ‘It is because of you that H.H. Dr. Athavale paid attention to me. So I am ever grateful to you.’

- Mr. Omkar Homkar, Jat, Sangli district, India.

In the next Issue, we will discuss repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name.

* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord's Name. Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) are advised to repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3, Clarification of Doubts section for details). Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over one year are advised to determine The Name appropriate for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
