Lord Ganesh and the demon Gajamugasur

There was a demon (asura) called Gajamugasur. He did deep penance and worshipped Lord Shiva, Who granted him several boons. With those boons Gajamugasur became extremely powerful and started troubling everyone. So everyone prayed to Lord Shiva to rescue them from the evil Gajamugasur.

Lord Shiva sent Lord Vinayak (another name for Lord Ganesh) to defeat Gajamugasur. Now Gajamugasur had been granted the boon that he would not be destroyed by any weapon. So Lord Ganesh broke off his right tusk and defeated Gajamugasur.

Gajamugasur still rushed at Lord Ganesh in the form of a small mouse (mooshak). Lord Ganesh crushed the ego and pride of Gajamugasur, and sat on him. The humbled Gajamugasur, in the form of the small mouse, finally bowed before Lord Ganesh. Lord Ganesh then accepted the mouse as his vehicle (vahana).

Moral:
The above story shows the power of Lord Ganesh, who can conquer any enemy, even an enemy that cannot be killed with weapons. It shows that even the greatest obstacle is like a mouse in comparison to Lord Ganesh, who can easily overcome it. That is why, before beginning any activity, be it worship to God or going to school, one should pray to Lord Ganesh or repeat (chant*) His Name to remove any obstacles.

Finding out the quality most needed after a sincere prayer to Goddess Durgadevi

In January of 2004, we had a children’s satsang in the Sanatan’s ashram in Devad, India. My friend and I wrote 10 positive qualities on 10 separate pieces of paper and after folding each piece of paper, put them in a box. Then all of us prayed to Goddess Durgadevi. We prayed thus: “We want to be loved by the Guru. For that we need to develop good qualities. There are several qualities we need to develop, please help us choose that quality which we lack the most.” After saying this prayer, each one of us picked out a slip of folded paper from the box.

We were most surprised to find that each of us had picked up the most appropriate quality that we needed to develop. For example, the slip of paper I picked read, “Read spiritual texts, and listen to stories about Saints.” I liked reading fictional novels and stories, hence this guidance was most appropriate for me. I was also surprised that my younger brother happened to pick up the slip of paper, which read, “Don’t use bad language. Watch your language.” Just a day before, he had called me names at school. After seeing these two examples, I truly felt that Goddess Durgadevi Herself was blessing us. I also feel that Sri Durgadevi wants us to remove our personality defects and imbibe the positive quality, which we lack the most.

[The above experience shows the children’s desire to improve themselves and how God helps when we want to do so. All of us have various defects that need to be removed and various qualities like sharing, honesty, faith in God, etc., which need to be developed. Thus, if we make sincere efforts to remove our defects and develop good qualities by chanting daily, listening to our elders, sharing, telling the truth, etc., God will help us, too.
- Editor.]
* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord’s Name as per our religion. Young children should also chant ‘Om Gan Ganapataye namaha’ for at least 15-30 minutes daily for divine protection. (Click here to download the correct marak tune for doing so. ) Older children, who have been doing spiritual practice for some time, can find out their exact chant from the experiment in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section. Parents should repeat (chant) The Lord's Name for children too young to do so for themselves.
