Actions/efforts to awaken spiritual emotion in an individual
(Continued from Issue 217)

To awaken spiritual emotion rapidly, initially one needs to make constant efforts at the level of the mind and intellect. In the last Issue, 217, a few examples of how The Lord helps when one prays with spiritual emotion were discussed. In this Issue we will discuss some errors in prayer.

Errors in prayer

    A. Praying to overcome worldly problems: Seekers should certainly pray to the Guru to guide them appropriately in overcoming certain exceptional worldly problems, which pose obstacles to spiritual practice. However, they should not ask for solutions to day-to-day problems, because this unnecessarily wastes spiritual practice and draws the seeker away from his prime objective of God-realization.

    B. Praying without making proper use of willful action (kriyaman): When it is necessary to pay attention to willful action, one should not trouble the Guru unnecessarily with prayer. Once, in the Sanatan’s ashram in Dhamse (Goa, India), it was decided to perform aarti (arati) along with a pre-recorded aarti hymn, to help the aarti occur with spiritual emotion. At that time, we noticed that that the aarti on the cassette was not sounding right. It began playing properly after seekers prayed. Actually, the audiocassette was lying around unused (gathering dust) for several days. Also, since the cassette was of an inferior quality, it should have been checked before playing. But without doing all this, seekers immediately prayed for it to play properly. Here seekers’ (use of) willful action was incorrect, and God had to spend His energy to salvage the situation.

In the next Issue, we will discuss gratitude.
