Practical Guidance
H.H. Dr. Jayant Athavale conducts weekly satsangs in the various Sanatan ashrams throughout India, which encompass several topics such as spiritual practice, Saints, Deities, the science of Spirituality, etc. This section of the Weekly Online gives some of the points He shared with seekers in some recent satsangs.

Necessity of repeating (chanting*) The Lord’s Name with spiritual emotion

Repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name should be given precedence in our spiritual practice. A seeker must complete his daily target** for repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name. Once a seeker starts completing the daily repetition (chanting) of The Lord’s Name quantitatively, he can concentrate on how to improve it qualitatively. While doing either individual or collective chanting, a seeker must focus on doing it with spiritual emotion, with concentration and attempt to feel oneness with the Name.

Steps to be taken before a repetition (chanting) The Lord’s Name session

Clean the area where the chanting session is to be conducted. Sprinkle Gomutra or Holy ash (vibhuti) mixed water for subtle purification, that is, to remove any distressing energies in the area. One must be in a sattvik state in order for the repetition (chanting) of The Lord’s Name to occur qualitatively. Hence, a seeker should not be rushing to the venue, hastily making preparations before repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name, as this will increase his raja-tama component. In order to be in a constantly sattvik mode, one should be always engaged in repeating (chanting) God’s Name, satseva, prayers, expressing gratitude, etc. Hence even before repeating (chanting) God’s Name a seeker should try to remain in a sattvik attitude (to obtain its full benefits).

* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord's Name. Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) are advised to repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3, Clarification of Doubts section for details). Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over one year are advised to determine The Name appropriate for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.

** Seekers in the initial stages of chanting/spiritual practice are advised to do at least 30 minutes to an hour of repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name every day, if possible, sitting in one place. Currently, seekers doing collective spiritual practice under the guidance of the Sanatan are prescribed between 2 to 7 hours, mostly 5 hours, of daily repetition (chanting) of The Lord’s Name.
