Practical Guidance
H.H. Dr. Jayant Athavale conducts weekly satsangs in the various Sanatan ashrams throughout India, which encompass several topics such as spiritual practice, Saints, Deities, the science of Spirituality, etc. This section of the Weekly Online gives some of the points He shared with seekers in some recent satsangs.

Importance of developing an ‘attitude of spiritual practice

Many times when seekers are initially assigned some satseva they do it in a regular and timely manner. However, after a period of time, they start becoming lax. This is because when someone first asks us to do something as spiritual practice, we start doing so properly. If they fail to remind us, we fail to act accordingly. Such seekers have not developed the ‘attitude of spiritual practice’ (attitude of a seeker or ‘sadhakatva’). When we start performing spiritual practice at the attitude level, we perform it in a responsible manner. Once we develop this attitude, we can continue to perform spiritual practice in any part of the world (without being dependent on anybody).

How to benefit from divine energy

We are able to benefit from divine energy when we perform spiritual activities like repeating (chanting*) The Lord’s Name, performing arati and visiting temples with concentration, spiritual emotion and oneness with the activity. During these activities, if we are restless, full of thoughts, then we will not be able to benefit from or absorb the spiritual energy. If we chant with concentration and spiritual emotion then the spiritual energy absorbed during the chanting session should last within us till the next chanting session.

The Sanatan’s ashram, Goa, India.

* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord's Name. Seekers in the initial stages of spiritual practice (less than one year) are advised to repeat The Name of the Lord as per their religion (refer to Issue 3, Clarification of Doubts section for details). Those seekers who have been doing regular spiritual practice for over one year are advised to determine The Name appropriate for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.
