Clarification of Doubts
Repeating (chanting*) The Lord’s Name and peace of mind

Question: How can chanting bring peace of mind and give Bliss?

- A visitor to an exhibition of the Sanatan’s volumes in Brisbane, Australia.

Dear seeker,

The main obstacle in experiencing Bliss and peace is the impurities or impressions in our mind. These impressions keep surfacing in terms of incessant thinking, expectations and reactions that prevent us from experiencing peace of mind. Thus, to experience peace, it is important to erase the millions of impressions in the mind with an equally subtle method, namely, spiritual practice. Repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name is especially effective in this regard, as it can purify the subconscious mind with the very mechanism of repetition that mental impressions function on. (Refer to Clarification of Doubts section of Issue 23 for a diagrammatic explanation of the mechanism of the mind and repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name.) The following points will shed further light on the power of repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name to impart Bliss:

The Lord’s Name is the unmanifest form of The Lord Himself. Since, God’s inherent nature is Bliss, repeating (chanting) a divine Name has the power to impart Bliss.
Based on the spiritual principle that a specific energy coexists with the sound, touch, form, taste and odor of any object, the energy of the divine Principle or deity, whose Name one repeats (chants), accompanies the Name.

For repetition (chanting) The Lord’s Name to bring Bliss (closeness with the Blissful God principle), it has to be done with spiritual emotion, so that it reaches the divine Principle, whose Name one calls. For this, it is important to repeat (chant) The Lord’s Name daily, starting with at least half an hour, and progressively building up the quantity to reach the stage of continuously doing so. Additionally, one should make efforts to increase the quality of repeating (chanting) The Lord’s Name, with efforts to do so with focus and spiritual emotion. This can be done with autosuggestions to reduce unnecessary thoughts, prayers to develop spiritual emotion, etc. Refer to Issues 206 through 213, Spiritual Practice for Awakening Spiritual Emotion section for examples on developing spiritual emotion through prayers.

- Editor.
* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord's Name (Seekers at the initial stage should chant the Name of the Kuldevata or the divine principle as per their religion; refer to Issue 3, Clarification of Doubts section for a list of the Names of The Lord to repeat in various religions. Seekers in the advanced stage of spiritual practice can refer to Issue 124, Message to Seekers section to determine the Name appropriate for them to repeat.)
