Common Misconceptions about Spirituality
Problems in life are fulfilled by merely forwarding e-mails

Recently, a seeker from the Sanatan received an e-mail containing a prayer from a friend. The e-mail said that if it was forwarded to thirteen other people, the sender would become successful. It also said that if the e-mail wasn’t forwarded one would lose everything.

Many of us must have received similar e-mails, promising the fulfillment of their wishes. Some e-mails of such nature also include threats of wrath. Many recipients of such e-mails oblige by forwarding such e-mails just to avoid any consequences if the threats were to come true, and further justifying the forwarding with the fact that all it takes is forwarding the e-mail to a group of people.

The following points will clarify whether one needs to take such e-mails or messages seriously:

Forwarding such e-mails further propagates ignorance or the misconception that by doing so, one’s wishes may come true. For a wish to come true, there has to be the subtle power of a resolve (sankalpa) behind it. Only highly evolved people possess such power, due to the purification of their mind and intellect attained with rigorous and devoted spiritual practice. Thus, when we give in to such emails, besides the fact that our wishes do not come true with it, an impression of fear is strengthened in our mind.
Events in one's life, especially major events like success or failure in life, occur due to either one’s Destiny or willful action. Willful actions constitute the part of life that is in our control. Destiny is the part of our life that is beyond the control of our gross actions. In today’s times (Kaliyug), an average of about 65% of events in a person’s life occur due to Destiny; it can be overcome only with spiritual practice depending on the severity of Destiny and intensity of spiritual practice. Thus, merely forwarding such emails does not change even minor predestined events or fulfill even small desires.

Regular spiritual practice can help us by not only reducing the effects of Destiny, but also giving us the strength to endure it.
