Story - The First Christmas Tree

The legend says that all of God’s creation offered something to the newborn Son of God. Only the fir tree had nothing to offer, as it has no flower or fruit. Feeling very sad, the fir-tree cried bitterly. An angel of God saw this and, pitying such sadness, took down a star from the sky and put it on top of the crying fir tree, so that it may have something to offer the newly born Christ. That is how legend says the first Christmas tree was decorated. Even today, Russians use decorations for Christmas and the Orthodox New Year.

Moral:
True happiness lies not in getting more things for ourselves, but in offering what we have to others. The best offering is to God, Who has given us everything.

Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas on January 7. Orthodox Christianity is practiced principally in Greece and Eastern Europe, including Russia. Read more about how Christmas is celebrated by Orthodox Christians in our article here.

Spiritual experience
A child seeker with complete belief in God’s shakti (energy)

Once I was narrating to my son, Mukul (age 7 years), a story about Lord Ganesh and Kartikeya (Lord Ganesh’s elder brother) as children. I said, “Once Lord Ganesh and Kartikeya started fighting while playing.” Immediately Mukul said, “Mother, They are both God, then how come They were fighting?”

After this, one day I was telling him about destruction of Lanka (today’s Sri Lanka) by Lord Maruti. While telling him this story I said, “Soldiers of Ravana ignited Lord Maruti’s tail.” Upon the completion of this sentence Mukul said, “How can soldiers of Ravana ignite Lord Maruti’s tail? He is so powerful.”

[The above experience shows us how we can have complete belief in God and His energy. When we are in as much satsang as possible, repeat (chant*) The Lord’s Name, learn about God, etc., we begin to develop belief and faith because He gives us spiritual experiences.
- Editor.]
* Constant remembrance or repetition of The Lord’s Name as per our religion. Young children should also chant ‘Om Gan Ganapataye namaha’ for at least 15-30 minutes daily for divine protection. Older children can find out their exact chant from the experiment in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section. Parents should chant for children too young to chant for themselves.
