Story - Arjun's Charioteer

During the Mahabharat war, the Kauravs were a much bigger army than the Pandavs had. Before the war started, Duryodhan, the wicked representative of the Kauravs, had chosen Lord Krushna’s army whereas Arjun, the representative of the Pandavs and an ardent devotee of Lord Krushna, was too happy to choose Lord Krushna to be his charioteer. Here is an example of how choosing The Lord over His army helped the Pandavs.

The Kauravs had many great warriors on their side. Karna was one such great warrior, who had made the choice to be loyal to his friend Duryodhan. During the course of the war, Arjun had to battle with Karna, who was an exceptional archer. Intending to cut Arjun's head, Karna shot a divine missile. Lord Krushna, Arjun's charioteer, foresaw this great danger coming towards Arjun. Immediately, the compassionate Lord made the five horses kneel down and pushed the chariot wheels a few inches down into the earth by pressing hard with His big toe. This made the missile miss its mark; it only took away Arjun's crown without injuring any part of his body. Shortly, by Lord Krushna's grace Arjun's arrow found its mark and Karna was no more.

Many such incidents of Lord Krushna's divine support took place during this Great War, which finally brought victory to the small, but Righteous Pandav army. The Kaurav army lost, despite its size and might.

Moral: This story shows us that if we choose God in anything we do, He makes obstacles even as great as divine missiles, simply pass us by with minimal damage. Hence, like Arjun if we choose God in everything by continual chanting* and prayer, we too, will realize that whatever pain we undergo during tough times is nothing compared to what could have happened without God on our side.

* Continually remembering God by repeating His Name (Children should chant God's Name as per their religion for at least 15 minutes daily and 'Om Gan Ganapataye namaha' for at least 30 minutes daily for God's blessings and protection. Older children can also find out the chant most suitable for them from the experiment given in Issue 124, Message to Seekers section.)

Spiritual experience

Lord Ganesh lovingly patting a child seeker with His trunk
For the past many months, I have been doing daily spiritual practice of chanting* under the guidance of the Sanatan. On 24 April 2003 night, I was mixing some Holy ash (vibhuti) with water to drink for protection from negative energies. As I was about to drink the water, I felt that someone told me to chant 'Om Gan Ganpataye namaha' five thousand times. I also felt that I could not complete that chanting, so I asked Lord Ganesh to forgive me and bowed down in front of Lord Ganesh's photograph. As I bowed down, for a moment I totally forgot where I was and also forgot about asking for forgiveness. After a while, I felt that Lord Ganesh was patting me on my head, neck and back with His trunk. It felt as if a mother was patting her child lovingly. I did not feel like getting up from the bowing position and remained in that position for a long time. Lord Ganesh continued to pat me with His trunk for as long as I was bowing to Him.

When I got up and drank the Holy ash water, it had unusual, sweet taste. I requested another seeker to taste it and she also commented that the Holy ash water had unusual sweet taste.

That night, when I was reciting Holy verses (stotras) of Lord Ganesh and Lord Rama, I felt that Lord Ganesh was once again patting me with His trunk. I woke up the next morning feeling very happy and chanting Lord Ganesh's chant, 'Om Gan Ganpataye namaha'.

[The above experience shows that if we do daily spiritual practice like chanting, we receive God's blessings and protection, as seen by Lord Ganesh's blessings and protection on this child seeker.
