Story - 'The pot of porridge that cleared the mud'

Once, Lord Buddha knocked at the door of a lady for alms (alms are food that people provide to Holy men, as respect to God.) While offering the food, the lady asked Him, "Why do people remember God by chanting (repeating) His Name and attending satsangs? Are they important?"

Lord Buddha smiled and promised that He would tell her the answer the next day. He also requested her to prepare plenty of porridge to be able to answer the question she had asked. The lady did not understand why Lord Buddha needed the porridge. As she was very curious she decided to prepare the porridge for Him.

The next day, Lord Buddha came and requested for alms in His bowl. The lady brought the big vessel of porridge and stepped forward to pour the porridge in the bowl. She was surprised to find that the bowl was full of mud. There was no space to pour the porridge. She did not know what to do.

Lord Buddha instructed her to pour the porridge on top of the mud. She followed the instructions and began pouring the porridge into the bowl. At first the porridge spilled on the ground but gradually, due to the force with which the porridge flowed into the bowl, the mud began to spill out as well. Finally, all the mud spilled out and the bowl was filled to the top with porridge. She was puzzled about why Lord Buddha had asked her to pour and waste so much of the porridge.

Lord Buddha then explained, "I have just showed you the importance of chanting* and satsang on the impure mind. When we chant and attend satsang, we constantly pour the positive thought of God's Name into our mind. Even if our mind is at first filled with bad qualities like anger, jealousy, greed, etc., these slowly wash away and it is then filled with God's Name that is full of purity and joy like God is."

The lady understood instantly and started chanting God's Name with faith everyday.

Moral: The above story explains how chanting and attending satsangs purify the mind. Like the lady, we too, can start chanting God's Name and try to be in satsang of other seekers or at least spiritual books to get rid of our negative feelings and experience joy everyday.

* Repeating the Lord's Name as per our religion.

Quiz

Question: Shown below is a picture of a Saint. He was the disciple of Shri Ramakrushna Paramahansa. He attended the world spiritual conference in Chicago in 1893 and made a famous speech about how all religions teach us to go close to God. Can you tell who this Saint is? (Swami Yogananda, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Muktananda)

In the next Issue we will discuss some of the teaching and qualities of this Saint.
Answer to last week's quiz  (Issue 171):
Dear children, last week's quiz was a trick question. All the examples were ways to go from gross to subtle. Now that we have understood various ways of going from gross to subtle let us try to put that into practice at once.

Spiritual experience

Overcoming fear of darkness by chanting*
I chant (repeat) God's Name as per my religion and the 'Shri Gurudev Datta' chant everyday. I also listen to holy verses of 'Ramraksha stotra' praising Lord Rama and 'Atharvashirsha' praising Lord Ganesh in the morning and at twilight. My mother tells me spiritual stories from the Sanatan Weekly Online about Lord Krushna, Lord Rama, and about devotees, such as Dhruva, Prahlad, etc.

Once I invited my friend, who is two years older than me, for a sleep over at my house. My friend said she could not come because she was afraid of darkness and cannot sleep without her mother. I immediately I told her that I am not afraid of darkness even though I sleep by myself in my own room. I chant everyday and feel protected all the time. Whenever I wake up at night, I start chanting and fall asleep immediately.

- Ms. Maitreyee Kale (age 5 years),
The Sanatan's satsang in Stamford, USA.

[This shows that even a five-year-old can chant daily and develop such faith in it. God's Name not only protects us, but also helps us overcome our fears, as seen above. We, too, can take inspiration from this five-year-old and can begin to chant everyday for at least 10-15 minutes, especially before going to bed.
