Monthly Activity Highlights

Sanatan seekers in Melbourne, Australia had the opportunity to spread Spirituality by delivering an interactive introductory lecture on the science of Spirituality at the Theosophical Society in Melbourne. The lecture was held on March 25, 2003. While preparing the lecture room, Sanatan seekers experienced a lot of spiritual emotion (bhav) and could perceive the presence of H. H. Dr. Jayant Athavale throughout the lecture. Although the audience was from varied backgrounds, they were all very receptive to the basic concepts of Spirituality covered in the lecture. At the end of the lecture, a question and answer session helped consolidate the audience's understanding of the concepts covered in the lecture.
Seekers in both Brisbane and Melbourne have redone the altar rooms in the respective ashrams, with the latest pictures of deities published by Sanatan's art department in Goa, India. They perceived immediate benefits of increased sattvikta in the ashram and felt a lot of spiritual emotion while preparing the altar. (Refer to Issue 155, Practical Guidance section for more details on setting up an altar and the benefits therein.)
Seekers in Brisbane, Mr. Atul and Mrs. Avantika Dighe had a satsang with their guiding seeker in the U.S., Mrs. Shilpa Kudtarkar. They were also able to have a satsang with seeker Mrs. Kshama Rane in Goa, India. From both these satsangs, they were able to lift up their spiritual practice (sadhana) and approach it with even more effort.
[Satsang is an important part of a seeker's spiritual practice. It is not only an opportunity for seekers to learn recent guidance and how to implement it, but is also a means for spiritual upliftment, as a result of increased sattvikta when seekers come together.

Obstacles
Seekers in Australia have been faced with many and varied obstacles, including inability to be consistent in chanting* and prayer, computer problems while performing satseva as well as obstacles to attending satsang. Despite heavy rain and having to travel over an hour to get to the satsang venue in Melbourne, seeker Ms. Therese Andrew has shown a lot of perseverance in attending satsang. As a result of perseverance in attending satsang, she has also been putting all guidance given at the satsang in to practice with immediate benefit.

Recent guidance and its application
In following guidance given by Mrs. Kudtarkar, Mr. and Mrs. Dighe implemented her guidance about completing the daily minimum of chanting. Now they chant aloud while doing daily chores at home and while traveling in the car. As a result, chanting has improved both qualitatively and quantitatively, as sometimes it has been observed that chanting continues mentally when the focus shifts when doing certain activities and when they cannot chant aloud.
[There are many different modes to chant, including aloud and mentally. As one progresses spiritually, the mode for one's chanting changes. (Refer to Issue 35, Clarification of Doubts section for an overview on the various modes of chanting.)
- Editor.]
Mr. And Mrs. Dighe have been diligent in following the guidance Mrs. Rane gave them as it applies to their daughter, by taking all the measures to combat negative energies in children; for example, performing drushta, completing the recommended chants for them, applying vibhuti to their foreheads, etc. (Refer to Issue 151, Practical Guidance section for details about measures for warding off negative energies in children.)
