Importance of subtle beauty (sattvikta)
over mere gross beauty (aesthetics)

Question: Sometimes while doing satseva that involves working with documents, I feel a document could be formatted to look much more aesthetic, but I am often told by my spiritual guide that the existing style is more sattvik. Can you explain the difference between sattvik and aesthetic; why is sattvikta given so much importance, even at the cost of aesthetics?

Answer:  The following table explains the difference between sattvikta and aesthetics:
Sattvikta
Aesthetics
Refers to subtle attributes/features. Refers to gross attributes/features
Determined by the sattva component - indicator of the God principle - in an object. It is subtle, that is, beyond the gross media - five senses, mind, intellect hence absolute. Determined by the gross beauty of an object, and can be understood by the gross media - five senses, mind, intellect. Hence, it is relative, that is, changes according to time, place and person, culture, training, etc.
Effect is far-reaching into the subtle, and thus, spiritually nourishing. Effect is limited to the gross, that is, nourishing only to the gross media.

Importance of sattvikta as compared to aesthetics:
Sattvik vibrations ensure smooth spiritual practice and progress, thus leading to experience of Bliss. Hence, any endeavor should be done with an emphasis on increasing sattvikta. For example, any document one prepares should place importance on the sattvikta rather than the gross aspects of layout and content.
Something that is beautiful at the gross level may not necessarily be pleasing at the subtle level. For example, straight/regular font is more sattvik than italicized font, however pleasant italicized fonts may be to the gross sight. Hence, using the gross intellect in making decisions in spiritual aspects, such as sattvikta of a document's layout, would prove futile.
The emphasis on sattvikta at the cost of aesthetics is similar to the emphasis one would lay on the nutrition content of a food over presentation or taste, to gain maximum benefit from the food. Thus, in Spirituality, sattvikta brings about maximum spiritual progress, as it ensures the presence of the God principle - the very aim of spiritual practice.
