Need For Spirituality
Spirituality - the permanent solution to anxiety
arising from rising terrorism

USA. A recent CBS news article published that the September 11 terrorist attacks and its aftermath, with reminders like tight security at airports, workplaces and schools, roads being closed, rising unemployment, fears of biological warfare, etc., have left many people feeling anxious. In an interview on CBS's, 'The Early Show', Dr. Edward M. Hallowell, a senior lecturer at Harvard Medical School and the founder of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health, gave advise on how to handle anxiety. He said that anxiety is perfectly normal and that it is hard not to react to the unknown factor. He added that it is better to worry with others, rather than worrying alone and that contact with others, be it spiritual contact with God, or emotional contact with one's pet, family or friends, can be a powerful tool to deal with anxiety. He emphasized the importance of staying informed about what's happening, to help feel more in control, saying that, "Until you feel connected and more in control, you can't let the worry go." He also suggested that people should take care of their health by getting rest, eating healthy food, exercising, and praying or meditating.

As Dr. Edward Hallowell has aptly stated, the importance of feeling connected and in control is indeed great. One can imagine the benefit of being able to be connected to divine power and the control one will experience by virtue of divine contact. Divine contact is achieved by regular spiritual practice. Repeating the Name of The Lord as per one's religion of birth is a simple spiritual practice most suited to the present times.
The rising terrorism, crime and overall intolerance are ultimately due to subtle factors, namely, the unprecedented increase in raja-tama and negative energies in today's societies, while falling victim to these unforeseen ills is as per one's destiny (prarabdha) in 65% of times, on an average. Individual spiritual practice benefits the individual by the gradual development of divine qualities in oneself, thus paving the way to easy connectivity to God. And collective spiritual practice or spreading Spirituality to others eliminates the raja-tama and negative energies in society, effectively staving off such perils.
