The organization was founded by H.H.
Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale in 1990, with the blessings of his
Sadguru, Saint
Bhaktaraj.
After getting His medical
degree in India, H.H. Dr. Jayant Balaji Athavale went to England
from 1971-1978 for higher education, where He performed extensive
research on hypnotherapy. Upon returning to India in 1978, He started
His own practice and continued His research in the field of hypnotherapy.
In 1982, He founded the Indian Society of Clinical Hypnosis
and Research and commenced the publication of an annual journal
on the subject.
However, after practicing
as a hypnotherapist for twenty years, He realized that nearly 30%
of his patients did not recover with the usual treatment regimens
and that some of these patients recovered after having gone on a
pilgrimage, or having followed the advice of a Saint. This by itself
meant that there is another science far superior to physical and
psychological medicine, and that was the science of Spirituality.
Due to His innate curiosity,
He began an in-depth study of the science of Spirituality and visited
various Saints in the search for answers to His doubts and the truth.
As His study unfolded, He found that there was an actual science
to be learnt that far exceeded the scope of medical science. This
was because medical science only dealt with physical and to some
extent psychological aspects of a patient, but completely left out
the entire spiritual aspects of the person.
He began to realize the
inadequacy of medical diagnosis, as it only dealt with the physical
and psychological aspects entirely. Later, when He advised His patients
to follow some spiritual practice, the cure rate increased substantially.
Besides, He himself undertook the practice of Spirituality and wrote
21 volumes on this subject with the objective that apart from His
patients, humanity at large should also benefit from the knowledge
He has acquired. His writing work still continues.
In 1988, Dr. Athavale commenced
free of charge workshops on Spirituality in the city of Mumbai,
India. In 1990, with the blessings of his Sadguru, Saint Bhaktaraj
of Indore, He founded the Sanatan Bharatiya Sanskruti
Sanstha so as to facilitate the spread of Spirituality.
After its tremendous growth, for the smooth running of the organization,
it was renamed as Sanatan Sanstha by H.H Dr. Jayant
Balaji Athavale on 24th March 1999. The main aim of the organization
is to present Spirituality in a scientific language for the curious
(jidnyasu) and to guide seekers.
